How to Install Arduino IDE

Arduino IDE is the program you use to write and upload code to the Little Robot Control Deck. Install it once on your computer, then use it for every lesson in this course.

What you need

  • A Windows, macOS, or Linux computer
  • USB cable from the Little Robot kit
  • Administrator rights on the computer (for installation)

Step 1 — Download Arduino IDE

System Download

macOS / Linux arduino.cc/en/software

Arduino IDE 2 download page on arduino.cc

For Windows, download the zip from this site or get the build from the official site. For macOS and Linux, choose Arduino IDE 2 on the official site and download the build for your system.

Step 2 — Install

Windows

  1. Extract the zip and run the .exe file.
  2. Accept the license and keep the default install location.
  3. When asked, install the USB driver — the Control Deck needs it to appear as a serial port.
  4. Finish the installer and launch Arduino IDE.

macOS

  1. Open the downloaded .dmg file.
  2. Drag Arduino IDE into Applications.
  3. On first launch, allow the app in System Settings → Privacy & Security if macOS blocks it.

Linux

  1. Extract the archive or use your distribution’s package if your school provides one.
  2. Run install.sh from the extracted folder, or start arduino-ide from the app menu.
