How to Use 3D Models

Use component models to design a mount, holder, or enclosure for your robot. Download the model you need and open it in CAD software, such as Autodesk Fusion.

What you need

  • A computer with CAD software that opens STEP files
  • A model from the catalog

Step 1 — Download a model

  1. Open the 3D model catalog.
  2. Click the component card. Rotate the model to view it from all sides.
  3. Click Download STEP and save the file to your computer.

Step 2 — Open in Fusion

  1. Launch Autodesk Fusion.
  2. Select File → Open → Open from my computer.
  3. Open the downloaded .step file and wait for it to load.

These commands use the English interface. If the file does not open, try Data Panel → Upload — see the Autodesk instructions.

Step 3 — Use it in your project

  1. Check the dimensions with Inspect → Measure and compare them with the physical component.
  2. Use the model as a reference: create a separate part alongside it, such as a motor mount.
  3. Leave room for wires, screws, and a little clearance to fit the component.

Catalog models are design references. The part to print is the mount or enclosure you create.

Step 4 — Prepare for printing

  1. Save your project in Fusion.
  2. Right-click your part in the Browser tree and select Save As Mesh.
  3. Choose 3MF or STL, set the units to Millimeter, and save the file.
  4. Open the file in your slicer, check its dimensions, and prepare the print.

For more on exporting, see the Autodesk guide.
